Celebrating Life
(April 7, 2004)

      By Fern Horst

"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)

A number of years ago I was privileged to attend the birthday celebration of a 50-year-old single lady who had unabashedly thrown the party herself. The beautifully decorated cake proclaimed, "Thank you, Lord, for 50 wonderful years!"

I was half her age at the time, and her exuberance and gratefulness for life left an indelible impression on me. Martha was a single lady who had for many years lived in the hills of Kentucky, helping in the local church and ministering to the local people. Now she was working at the small Bible college where I also worked, and I was privileged to see her enthusiasm for life in her everyday walk.

What a different perspective she had from many who bemoan turning 50 and the aging that comes with it! Her attitude reflected a joy and gratefulness for those 50 years and all that she had been privileged to experience thus far in life with her Lord. She saw her birthday not as reason to focus on herself, but rather as reason to thank the Lord for His faithfulness to her.

And so it should be for all of us. It's a choice we make of what we are going to focus on: are we going to focus on what we have missed out on or are lacking in, or will we focus on the many gifts and experiences God has given us? God has given us life, not to regret as the years add up, but rather to live with enthusiasm and purpose in the Lord. Jesus said that He came so that we might have life, and so that we can have it more abundantly!

Because God created us, we have life. Because Jesus died and rose for us, we can live life to the full!
