Needed: Faithful Friends

      By Fern Horst

"And again [Jesus] entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay." (Mark 2:1-4)

Here is a man with an illness which prevented him from going anywhere on his own two legs. He had to rely on others to get him to where he needed to go, to bring him what he needed, and to provide for his needs. We don't know anything more about him or his friends, but we can read a bit between the lines.

One thing that seems evident is that he had friends who cared about him. In fact, they cared so much that they were willing to go to great lengths to get him to Jesus. Their extreme efforts to remove a section of a roof on a house in order to place their friend at Jesus' feet reveal at least two things: they cared about their friend and they had faith that Jesus could help him.

There are two challenges here for me: do I love my friends and family enough to make an effort to bring their needs to Jesus? And, do I have enough faith in Jesus that I believe He can and will help them if I ask Him?

It may be friends and family who don't know Him as their Lord and Saviour, or it may be those who are believers and have a need for healing or hope or guidance in their lives. They may be so disabled by their circumstances that they don't have the energy to cry out to Him themselves. In many cases praying fervently for them and laying their needs at Jesus' feet is the best thing I can do for them.

Jesus did not disappoint this man or his friends. In fact, He did more for this man than his friends had anticipated. Not only did Jesus heal him so that he could leave the house on his own two feet, but he addressed his spiritual needs as well and told him his sins were forgiven. Jesus saw a need that this man's friends didn't know he had, and He was able to address it because they had brought their friend to Him.

Who do you know that needs you to bring them to Jesus?
