An Ode to Christmas

By Kelly Tinning

Here's to Crispmess, monument of the ages:
A proverb in the stone of economics,
Wool for the Wolves of "Increased Sales",
A twist for the rubber arm of Idulgence.

And here's to Mixmas, religiously observed:
The tired-of-rigour, but lusty gather,
so they might be found standing
in the weak's winest hour and at the bong of the New Beer.

Solstice. The sun stands still. Daylight's shortest breath.
Dark, cold and, our backs to the Son:
The Christ of Christmas.
